Job description
As Junior Data Engineer, you’ll help build data products for the air‑cargo logistics industry by turning your academic knowledge into practical solutions, working closely with data engineers, software engineers, analysts, and consultants to solve real operational challenges.
Who we are
We are Rotate. We help key players across the global air cargo and logistics industry make better commercial and strategic decisions. We provide cloud-based software and analytics, world-leading market data, and data-driven strategy consulting. Our clients include top-tier airlines, airports, freight forwarders, governments, shippers, investors, and other industry stakeholders.
Founded in 2022 by a core team of former aviation strategy consultants, Rotate has grown rapidly. We now have offices in the Netherlands and Malaysia and a diverse team of around 50 professionals, including strategy consultants, data scientists, software developers, and data engineers. Demand for our work continues to grow strongly, and we are therefore looking for talented data engineers to strengthen our team.
What you'll do
Rotate operates an online SaaS platform built around three core product, each maintained by a dedicated cross-functional team. As a junior data engineer, you'll join one of these product teams — a close-knit group of data engineers, software developers, customer success consultants, and business professionals who together keep a complex B2B system running smoothly.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Maintaining and improving existing data pipelines
Onboarding new clients and integrating their datasets
Translating client challenges into business logic and mathematical models
Building functionality on top of our advanced operations research models
Contributing to a scrum team responsible for the ongoing development of a live SaaS product
Developing a deep understanding of data and its impact on operations and processing
Along the way, you'll gain hands-on expertise in the air cargo industry — both the domain knowledge that makes our products tick and the technical skills that will define your growth as a data engineer. You won't be doing it alone either; a senior data engineer will be right there to guide and support you as you find your feet.
Why work at Rotate?
At Rotate, you’ll join a fast-moving team that’s tackling an endless stream of fascinating problems in an industry that’s essential to the global economy. We build high-impact products and strategies using modern technologies, and we’re committed to tailoring your personal and professional growth as we scale. Our performance management and learning programs are all about helping you grow, with coaching and mentorship on a daily basis.
In addition to excellent compensation, you’ll get to:
Build things that matter. Solve complex problems in a critical industry. Advise clients on their most fundamental strategic questions, or partner with airlines to co-develop data-driven SaaS products with the latest technology stack. Drive efficiency and sustainability in global supply chains.
Write your own story. Feel like an entrepreneur within a well-funded company and established team. Help us build Rotate and share in our joint success. Partner with us to tailor your development and career ambition.
Live unforgettable experiences. Get exposed to different cultures, go on unforgettable offsites, experience the highs and lows of scale-up life…and if you’re keen, travel the world and eat sushi in Tokyo!
Job requirements
Your qualifications
We're looking for curious, driven self-starters who are excited to learn, experiment, and grow into a data engineering role. You enjoy tackling problems, asking the right questions, and taking ownership of your work — even when you're still finding your footing. You do your best work in a supportive, flexible environment where initiative is valued and your contributions make a real difference.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
A university degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field
A proactive, problem-solving mindset — you like breaking things down and figuring things out hands-on
Some practical experience with Python, whether through internships, personal projects, coursework, or just tinkering
Strong communication skills — you can articulate your thinking clearly and enjoy working with both technical and non-technical colleagues
Fluency in English (additional languages are a welcome bonus)
A genuine interest in the aviation industry
Nice to have (don't worry — you'll grow into these):
Familiarity with data pipelines, APIs, or distributed systems, and the drive to go deeper
Exposure to DevOps concepts such as CI/CD, cloud platforms, or containerisation
Curiosity about AWS, Kubernetes, monitoring, or data processing workflows — and the enthusiasm to learn them on the job
Where is Rotate located?
We are based in Utrecht, within 2 minute walking distance from Central Station. We find value in being together to collaborate, but we offer flexibility to accommodate different ways of working.
